Founded as "Gibson Mandolin - Guitar Co. Ltd." in 1902 by Orville H. Gibson in Kalamazoo/USA. At this time they mainly made archtop mandolins and guitars.
Gibson had a very big success with their carved guitars and increased popularity with many well known electric guitars since the 1930s. Many of them are still produced today, like the Super 400, the L5, Byrdland and ES-175 etc.
The most famous Gibson guitar was the Les Paul, one of the first solid body guitars, invented by famous guitarist Les Paul. Since then Gibson made a lot of very popular solid body electric guitars, like the SG, the Flying-V, Explorer, Firebird and many more.
During the years Gibson bought a lot of guitar companies, like Epiphone (in 1957), Dobro, Kramer, Steinberger and many more...
In the 1980s the production moved from Kalamazoo to Nashville, Tennessee.
Gibson is still one of the biggest and most popular guitar manufacturers. All Gibson guitars are produced in the USA, the cheaper ones are made under the Epiphone-brand in Japan and later in China.
There is much more to say about Gibson. You can get a lot of information via the internet and in many, many book publications.
